Community Event Set to Showcase Wide Range of Sports and Leisure Activities

Residents across the Borough are being encouraged to take part in the return of the Waltham Cross Sports Festival this summer, as organisers prepare to welcome visitors of all ages and abilities for a free day of sporting activities and community engagement.

The event will take place on Saturday 15 August from 12noon to 4pm at Waltham Cross Playing Fields, offering attendees the opportunity to try a range of sports at no cost. Activities planned for the day include basketball, football, mini-tennis, calisthenics, skateboarding, boxing and cycling.

Entry to the festival is free, with organisers also providing all necessary equipment to encourage participation and accessibility. The initiative aims to connect local residents with sports and recreational activities that they may not have previously experienced.

The festival forms part of wider efforts to increase community use of Waltham Cross Playing Fields following significant redevelopment work completed in 2024. The site has increasingly become a hub for local activities and events after extensive improvements to its facilities and infrastructure.

Refurbished Facilities Continue to Drive Community Engagement

A key element of the redevelopment programme was the refurbishment of the Sports Pavilion by Belfry Property Services. The upgraded building now includes modernised and fully accessible amenities designed to support a broader range of community and sporting activities.

Pavilion Improvements Support Inclusive Access

The refurbished pavilion features expanded meeting rooms, a newly equipped kitchen, and updated toilet and shower facilities. The enhancements were introduced to improve accessibility and provide a more welcoming environment for residents, sports clubs and community organisations.

Since the completion of the works, several new facilities at the Playing Fields have attracted visitors from across the Borough and neighbouring areas. Among the most popular additions are the skatepark and the interactive Sutu Rebound Football Wall, both of which have become regular attractions for local users and organised groups.

Council representatives say the continued use of the venue demonstrates growing demand for accessible community sports facilities and outdoor recreational spaces.

Council Encourages Residents to Participate

Councillor Pierce Connolly, Cabinet Member for Leisure and Culture, said:

“The Waltham Cross Sports Festival is a fantastic opportunity for residents of all ages to get active, try something new, and enjoy everything on offer at the Waltham Cross Playing Fields. Events like this are exactly what community spaces should be used for, and I encourage everyone to come along and take part.”

The council hopes the festival will not only encourage healthier lifestyles but also strengthen community connections by bringing together residents through shared activities and experiences.

Organisers believe the free-to-attend format will help remove barriers to participation, particularly for families and younger residents looking to explore new sports without financial commitment. The event is also expected to provide local sports groups and organisations with an opportunity to engage with potential new participants and raise awareness of ongoing activities available throughout the year.

With the Playing Fields continuing to evolve into a focal point for community recreation, the return of the Sports Festival is expected to further reinforce the site’s role as a major local destination for inclusive leisure and sporting opportunities.

Residents are encouraged to attend throughout the afternoon, with activities suitable for beginners and experienced participants alike.
