“Vulnerable” dogs are pets that are out of fashion and, as a result, less well known.

Some dog breeds are at risk of extinction in the UK because they are considered vulnerable. This happens with species that are not “fashionable” and are eventually forgotten by popularity. The Kennel Club has published a list of over 30 breeds.

For example, a breed is considered vulnerable if it has 300 to 450 Kennel Club registrations and appears at the bottom of the popular dog rankings.

“Vulnerable native breeds are dog breeds of British and Irish origin, which are considered vulnerable due to declining registration numbers. These breeds are at risk of disappearing from our parks and streets because they are either unknown to people or not considered civilized,” the statement said.

The Kennel Club’s note added: “Some breeds are so few in number that they are completely unrecognizable to the British public, which is worrying because breeds suited to people’s lifestyles are overlooked in favor of other breeds. They shouldn’t be because they aren’t well known.”

The Kennel Club is urging Brits to give these less popular dogs a chance before it’s too late. “To give these dogs the chance they deserve, it’s important to consider lesser-known breeds if you’re considering getting a dog,” the report added.

“There are over 200 recognized dog breeds in the UK, so there’s a breed for everyone. We think people choose a breed from a breed group they’ve heard of before, meaning they may forget the right breed for them and their lifestyle,” he concluded.
