With the resumption of British flights to Portugal, since May 17, the consumption of British people in our country has increased significantly in one week. According to Reduniq, the largest national network for accepting payments with national and foreign cards, Portugal recorded an 80% increase in bills from British payment cards across the country, compared to the previous week.

This growth was reflected, above all, in the Algarve, a traditional tourist area, where total business volume in the area increased by 13% in the week of the border reopening compared to the previous week. Of these results, 53% are due to the increase in the number of British visitors.

In terms of English consumption in Faro, spending increased by more than 111% from the week of May 10 to May 16 for the week of May 17 to May 23, with a focus on the weekend of May 22 and 23, as British volume increased in the Algarve By 231% over the previous weekend.

However, according to data compiled by the company, this growth remains insufficient to reach pre-pandemic billing levels, with total UK bills keeping a 55% drop, compared to the same period in 2019.

Total revenue from tourism activities in Faro, which includes hotels, car rentals, travel agencies and airlines, increased 82% last week compared to the previous week.

In a more detailed analysis of the hotel sector, there was 57% growth in Faro, in the week of May 17-23, compared to the previous week. Here, too, the values remain 46% lower than those recorded in the same period in 2019.

The restoration of the area increased by 24% from May 10-16 to May 17 to May 23, and still maintains a 14% decline compared to the same period in 2019.
