Thurrock Council has abandoned plans to downgrade caretaker roles across its housing estate after workers overwhelmingly backed strike action in a dispute over jobs and pay.
The decision means planned industrial action by caretakers, which was due to begin on 29 September, has been called off by the GMB Union. The union said the proposed changes could have reduced affected workers’ salaries by an average of £2,000 a year.
