On Monday, a 5.6-magnitude earthquake struck Indonesia, in the West Java province of the island of Java, killing at least 46 people.

Suharyanto, head of the National Agency for Disaster Mitigation, told the Associated Press: “There are 46 dead in Cianjur Regional Hospital and about 700 injured. Many were injured due to being hit by collapsed buildings.”

A large number of buildings in central Jakarta’s business district were evacuated, and several people told Reuters they felt buildings shaking.

Earlier, Hermann Suhrmann, head of the administration of Cianjur – the city where the epicenter was registered – told Metro TV news channel that 20 people died in hospital after the quake. Agence France-Presse reported that at least 300 were injured in the aftermath of the earthquake, requiring medical assistance.

The United States Geological Survey (USGS), which monitors seismic activity worldwide, recorded the quake at 1:21 p.m. (6:21 a.m. in Lisbon) and located the epicenter 16.7 kilometers from the city of Cianjur, which has a population of About 170,000 people.
