In February 2021, more than 500 grams of debris was picked up from residential parks, driveways, and fields after a giant fireball took off over Winkcombe. Since it was recovered less than 12 hours after the crash, this means that the meteorite was slightly exposed to the elements, allowing it to keep its chemical composition intact.

For the analysis of minerals and elements Winchcombe meteoriteScientists polished it, heated it, and bombarded it with x-rays and lasers. This revealed that water makes up to 11% of its weight and that it comes from the outer part of the asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter.

The results were published last Wednesday (November 16) in the Science Advances Journalhowever, is only a part of the analytics Winchcombe meteorite🇧🇷 Researchers will continue to study the artifact in order to reveal more secrets about the origins of the solar system.
