A new strategic partnership between Teesside University and the Ministry of Defence (MOD) is set to enhance the UK’s defence capability by training the next generation of asset management professionals responsible for overseeing critical defence infrastructure and equipment.

The collaboration will see MOD personnel enrol in Teesside University’s Asset Manager Level 4 Apprenticeship programme, helping to build specialist expertise in managing the wide range of assets that support the nation’s armed forces and defence operations.

The initiative reflects the MOD’s ongoing focus on workforce development as a key component of national defence readiness while reinforcing Teesside University’s growing reputation as a provider of professional education and apprenticeship training in strategically important sectors.

Supporting the UK’s Defence Modernisation Goals

The partnership comes as the UK government continues to prioritise the modernisation of defence infrastructure and operational capabilities. The Strategic Defence Review has highlighted the need for resilient, efficient and well-managed assets to support military readiness and deliver value for public investment.

The MOD manages a vast portfolio of assets, including military bases, vehicles, naval vessels, aircraft and advanced technology systems. Ensuring these assets are effectively managed throughout their lifecycle is considered essential to maintaining operational effectiveness and national security.

By equipping personnel with advanced asset management skills, the programme aims to strengthen the MOD’s ability to manage these complex resources more efficiently and strategically.

Investment in People and Defence Capability

Emma Capone, Apprenticeship Policy Manager at the Ministry of Defence, said the initiative represents an important investment in both personnel and long-term defence capability.

“Effective asset management underpins everything the MOD does.

“Our partnership with Teesside University is an investment in our people and the long-term capability of UK defence.”

The programme is designed to provide participants with the knowledge, practical skills and professional behaviours required to oversee critical assets in challenging operational environments.

University Highlights National Importance of Collaboration

Teesside University leaders described the agreement as a significant milestone that demonstrates confidence in the institution’s ability to deliver education aligned with national priorities.

Professor Paul Croney OBE, Vice-Chancellor and Chief Executive of Teesside University, said:

“This partnership with the Ministry of Defence is a proud and defining moment for Teesside University.

“It is a clear recognition of our academic excellence, our expertise in professional apprenticeship delivery, and our ability to work as a trusted partner on work of genuine national importance.

“Asset management sits at the heart of defence capability and, through this programme, our students will not only gain world-class professional qualifications but will make a tangible contribution to the safety and resilience of the United Kingdom.”

Professionally Accredited Training Programme

The Asset Manager Level 4 Apprenticeship is accredited by the Institute of Asset Management (IAM), the internationally recognised professional body for the asset management sector.

The programme has been developed to provide a comprehensive understanding of asset management principles and practices through five core modules:

  • Introduction to Asset Management
  • Asset Health and Lifecycle Enhancement
  • Management and Planning
  • Strategic Asset Management and Decision Making
  • Work Based Project

Each module is designed to address real-world challenges associated with managing defence assets in highly regulated and operationally critical environments.

A key component of the apprenticeship is the Work Based Project, which requires participants to complete an MOD-assigned project that delivers measurable business benefits. This approach ensures that learning outcomes translate directly into practical improvements within defence operations.

Flexible Learning Model for Defence Personnel

The apprenticeship will be delivered through a flexible online format that combines live virtual sessions, self-directed learning, coaching and mentoring support. The model is designed to accommodate the demanding schedules of defence personnel while allowing participants to develop professionally alongside their existing responsibilities.

Teesside University brings significant experience to the partnership, having earned recognition as Times Higher Education University of the Year 2025 and receiving an Outstanding rating from Ofsted for its apprenticeship provision.

The university also has established expertise in engineering, advanced manufacturing and net-zero infrastructure—disciplines that are increasingly important as the MOD continues to modernise its estate and prepare for future operational challenges.

The partnership is expected to play an important role in strengthening professional capability across the defence sector while supporting the UK’s broader objective of maintaining a modern, resilient and effective defence infrastructure.
