Monje G. Boundy, Louis E. Bruce, and Alexei Ekimov distinguished themselves by “discovering and developing quantum dots.”

The academy explained, in a statement, that:“These tiny particles have unique properties and now scatter their light from TV screens and LEDs,” in addition to catalyzing chemical reactions and “their clear light can illuminate tumor tissue for the surgeon.”

This year’s Nobel Prize winners in Chemistry were able to produce particles so small that their properties are “determined by quantum phenomena.”

“Particles, called quantum dots, are today of great importance in nanotechnology.”

“Quantum dots have many wonderful and unusual properties. It is important to emphasize that they have different colors depending on size.”
says Johan Akvist, Chairman of the Nobel Committee for Chemistry.

The memo also explains that the quantum dots “illuminate computer screens and QLED-based TV screens.” Furthermore, they give “nuances of light from certain LEDs” and are used by biochemists and doctors to “map biological tissues.”

For this reason, the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences believes that quantum dots “bring the greatest benefit to humanity.”

“Researchers believe that in the future they could contribute to flexible electronics, small sensors, thin solar cells, and encrypted quantum communications – so we are just beginning to explore the potential of these small particles.”

The 2022 Nobel Prize in Chemistry was awarded to Caroline R. Bertozzi, Morten Meldahl, and K. Barry Sharpless “for the development of click chemistry and orthogonal biochemistry.”

The 2023 Nobel Prize season began on Monday with the announcement of the award in the field of medicine, and will continue until the ninth of next October, when the award in economics will be announced. Throughout the week, the winners of the Physics (Tuesday), Chemistry (Wednesday), Literature (Thursday), and Peace (Friday) awards will be announced. The announcement of excellence in the field of economic sciences is scheduled to be on Monday 9.

All categories will be announced in Stockholm, Sweden, with the exception of the Nobel Peace Prize, which will be awarded as usual by the Norwegian Nobel Committee and will be held at the Norwegian Nobel Institute in Oslo.

This year’s Nobel Prize winners will receive an additional 1 million Swedish krona, bringing the total amount received by the winners to 11 million Swedish krona (about 925 thousand euros).
