Chicago songwriter’s first solo album blends classic pop craftsmanship with indie experimentation

Chicago musician MV Wells is set to release his debut solo album Le Dauphin on 29 May 2026, marking a significant creative shift for the long-time indie rock figure as he moves from band-focused projects into a more expansive orchestral pop sound.

After spending more than a decade embedded in Chicago’s independent music scene through projects including NE-HI and Spun Out, Wells has delivered a record that places songwriting and melody at the centre of its identity. Le Dauphin combines elements of indie rock, orchestral pop and singer-songwriter traditions, while drawing influence from artists such as Harry Nilsson, Burt Bacharach, Electric Light Orchestra and early solo John Lennon.

The album arrives as Wells seeks to establish a more deliberate and refined artistic direction. While his earlier work was often associated with rough-edged guitar hooks and lo-fi energy, the new material introduces richer arrangements, layered instrumentation and broader sonic ambition without abandoning the unconventional qualities that defined his previous output.

Recorded in Chicago at Palisade and The Mango Pit studios, Le Dauphin was produced in collaboration with Wells’ cousin and long-time creative partner Joshua Wells, whose previous credits include work with Black Mountain and Destroyer. Together, the pair expanded the musical palette considerably, incorporating strings, brass arrangements, synthesiser textures and dense vocal harmonies throughout the record.

Despite its polished presentation, the album avoids simply recreating vintage pop influences. Instead, Wells blends classic songwriting structures with more experimental touches, giving the project a distinctly modern character. The result is a collection of songs that moves fluidly between accessible melodic pop and more atmospheric, art-pop inspired passages.

Industry observers are likely to note the album’s careful balance between familiarity and unpredictability. Wells’ songwriting continues to lean heavily on memorable hooks, but the arrangements allow the material greater depth and emotional range than his earlier projects. His vocal delivery, understated and dryly expressive, recalls elements of British pub rock figures such as Nick Lowe and Wreckless Eric, while remaining firmly rooted in the Midwestern indie traditions that shaped his career.

Several tracks highlight the record’s stylistic diversity. Songs built around bright piano progressions, brass flourishes and rhythmic swing sit alongside more expansive compositions that incorporate psychedelic textures and early progressive-pop influences. Rather than feeling disconnected, those shifts create a cohesive listening experience centred on Wells’ consistent melodic approach.

The supporting cast behind the album also plays a notable role in shaping its sound. Joshua Wells handled drums, percussion and much of the album’s sonic architecture, including string arrangements that add scale and emotional weight to key tracks. Additional contributions came from Olivia Love on violin, Benjamin Kalb on cello, and Joe Lill on trumpet and flugelhorn, while further sound design elements subtly reinforce the album’s more atmospheric moments.

Visually, Le Dauphin also embraces a strong artistic identity. The album artwork was created by Paul Whitehead, recognised for his iconic work with early Genesis, while photography was provided by Alexa Viscius alongside additional images from Katherine Levi.

The release represents the culmination of years spent touring extensively across Chicago venues, Midwestern taverns and festival circuits. Throughout that period, Wells built a reputation as a songwriter capable of delivering immediate, memorable hooks without sacrificing personality or authenticity. According to those close to the project, Le Dauphin refines that instinct rather than abandoning it.

The album’s positioning within the wider independent music market may also prove commercially significant. At a time when orchestral pop and retro-inspired songwriting continue to attract renewed interest among alternative audiences, Wells’ combination of classic pop craftsmanship and indie credibility could broaden his reach beyond the regional scene where he first established his reputation.

Key tracks from the album include “Dreaming About You”, “Love Unseen” and “Tropic De Novo”, with promotional materials confirming that the release contains no explicit language. Genre descriptors attached to the project include indie rock, orchestral pop, singer-songwriter, art pop, yacht rock and psychedelic pop.

While Le Dauphin is technically Wells’ first solo album, the record carries the confidence of an experienced songwriter rather than a newcomer testing unfamiliar territory. Its blend of classic influences, layered production and understated experimentation positions it as a carefully constructed debut that reflects years of artistic development rather than reinvention for its own sake.

Le Dauphin will be released publicly on 29 May 2026.
