Melbourne Couture Metal Group Expands International Ambitions With Cinematic Exploration of Grief and Loss
Australian symphonic metal band ANA has unveiled a new music video for its track “Papa,” marking another major release tied to the group’s recently launched full-length album Motivated By Death.
The Melbourne-based quintet, which describes its sound and aesthetic as “couture metal,” released the emotionally driven video through Eclipse Records following the album’s launch on May 29, 2026. The project further positions the band within the expanding global symphonic metal market, blending orchestral arrangements, theatrical visual presentation and deeply personal songwriting.
The single “Papa” centres on a posthumous letter written by vocalist Anna Khristenko to her father, who died from addiction-related circumstances during her childhood. The track explores themes of grief, unresolved trauma and emotional acceptance, while the accompanying video presents those ideas through a tightly controlled cinematic setting.
Directed by award-winning Australian photographer Peter Coulson, the visual production was filmed at Koukei Studio in Kilsyth, South Australia. The video places the band members within a confined four-cornered set, with each angle deliberately designed to create psychological tension and confrontation between the performers.
Video Explores Personal Loss Through Claustrophobic Cinematic Design
According to guitarist Josh Mak, the track was designed as a direct reflection on the emotional complexity of permanent loss and unresolved grief.
The visual presentation mirrors that emotional conflict by placing ANA’s masked performers in close proximity, emphasizing vulnerability alongside the aggressive sonic elements associated with symphonic metal.
Rather than relying on fantasy narratives commonly associated with the genre, the band focuses on emotional realism and introspective storytelling.
Mak said the song’s themes extend beyond Khristenko’s personal experience and are intended to resonate with wider audiences dealing with grief and emotional hardship.
The resulting production balances dramatic performance sequences with quieter moments of fragility, giving the project a cinematic quality more commonly associated with art-house visual storytelling than conventional heavy metal videos.
The release of “Papa” marks the third music video from Motivated By Death, continuing a broader campaign surrounding the album’s international rollout.
ANA Blends Fashion Aesthetics With Symphonic Metal
ANA has attracted attention within the heavy music scene for combining high-fashion imagery with orchestral metal arrangements and modern hard rock influences.
Led by Khristenko, the group performs in masked personas described as “super-human” characters, an identity reinforced by Peter Coulson’s photography across the album’s visual campaign. The aesthetic attempts to bridge luxury fashion presentation with the intensity and theatricality of heavy music performance.
The band’s latest album was produced by Khristenko and Josh Mak, with engineering and mixing handled by Chris Themelco at Monolith Studios. Mastering duties were completed by Thomas “Plec” Johansson at The Panicroom Studio, whose previous credits include Groove Armada, Soilwork and Mayhem.
Musically, the record combines orchestral layering with precision-focused production, positioning ANA within the broader commercial symphonic metal landscape occupied by acts such as Nightwish, Within Temptation and Evanescence.
Motivated By Death Focuses on Impermanence Rather Than Morbidity
Despite the title, Motivated By Death does not present death solely as a dark or destructive force. Instead, the album frames mortality as a catalyst for creativity, urgency and self-awareness.
That concept is particularly evident in the track “Shadow of Life,” which serves as one of the thematic anchors of the record.
Rather than dwelling on despair, the song explores how the awareness of impermanence can shape personal meaning and artistic expression. The album’s broader narrative examines the tension between vulnerability and resilience while maintaining the grand orchestral structure associated with symphonic metal.
Other highlighted tracks include “Hate Me,” which further demonstrates the band’s ability to balance aggressive instrumentation with emotionally charged lyrical themes.
International Expansion Signals Growing Ambitions
The release of Motivated By Death arrives as ANA seeks to establish a broader international presence beyond Australia’s independent heavy music circuit.
Melbourne has become increasingly recognised as a global hub for alternative and heavy music innovation, and ANA’s fusion of fashion-forward visual branding with symphonic metal places the band in a distinctive commercial niche within the genre.
Industry observers note that visual storytelling and cinematic branding have become increasingly important within the global metal market, particularly as streaming platforms and digital video distribution continue reshaping audience engagement strategies.
By integrating emotionally personal subject matter with carefully curated visual aesthetics, ANA appears positioned to attract listeners beyond traditional heavy metal audiences.
The current line-up of ANA includes Anna Khristenko on vocals, Josh Mak on guitar, Cody Lamb on bass, Andres Felipe Martinez Osorio on drums and Mark Shi on keyboards.
The band’s album Motivated By Death is now available on CD Digipak and digital streaming platforms through Eclipse Records.
