Residents across the Borough of Broxbourne are being encouraged to take part in Remembrance Sunday commemorations on 8 November 2026, with services, wreath-laying ceremonies and community tributes planned in Cheshunt, Hoddesdon, Goffs Oak and Broxbourne.
The annual commemorations will bring together local residents, civic leaders, veterans and community organisations to honour members of the Armed Forces who lost their lives in conflicts and to recognise the sacrifices made by those who have served.
Thousands Expected to Attend Remembrance Sunday Events
Remembrance Sunday remains one of the most significant occasions in Broxbourne’s civic calendar, with strong public participation in previous years.
According to Broxbourne Borough Council, approximately 6,700 people attended Remembrance parades in Cheshunt, Goffs Oak and Hoddesdon last year, demonstrating the continued importance of the commemorations to local communities.
This year’s programme will feature ceremonies at war memorials and services in churches across the borough, providing opportunities for residents of all ages to participate.
All events are open to the public, with the Council encouraging individuals and families to attend their nearest service.
Mayor to Lead Cheshunt Commemorations
In Cheshunt, the Mayor of Broxbourne, Councillor Patsy Spears, will represent the Council at the town’s Remembrance Sunday ceremony.
An act of remembrance and wreath-laying ceremony will begin at 10.30am at the memorial situated behind the Almshouses on Turners Hill.
The ceremony will provide an opportunity for residents to gather in tribute to those who served and died during military conflicts.
Hoddesdon to Hold Memorial and Church Services
In Hoddesdon, the Leader of Broxbourne Borough Council, Councillor Corina Gander, will attend the commemorations alongside local residents.
The programme will begin at 10.35am at the town’s war memorial, where participants will gather for the remembrance ceremony.
A church service will follow at 11.05am at St Catherine’s and St Paul’s Parish Church.
The two events will offer opportunities for both civic and religious reflection, continuing the town’s tradition of marking Remembrance Sunday through community participation.
Goffs Oak and Broxbourne Announce Service Timetables
Residents in Goffs Oak will be able to attend a Remembrance Sunday service at Goffs Oak Methodist Church, beginning at 10am.
Following the church service, a wreath-laying ceremony will take place at the local war memorial at 10.40am.
The Deputy Mayor of Broxbourne, Councillor Sacha Kanatli, will attend the memorial ceremony on behalf of the Council.
In Broxbourne, commemorations will begin with a service at St Augustine’s Church at 10.15am.
The Deputy Leader of the Council, Councillor Jim Clune, will subsequently attend the wreath-laying ceremony at Broxbourne War Memorial at 10.45am.
The scheduled events across all four communities will allow residents to observe the national occasion locally while paying tribute to those who made the ultimate sacrifice.
Community Poppy Displays Highlight Local Participation
Alongside the formal ceremonies, residents can visit a large community-created poppy display at Cheshunt Old Pond.
The installation features approximately 5,000 knitted and crocheted poppies, produced through a community initiative led by Cheshunt & District Royal British Legion Club.
The display reflects the contribution of local volunteers and community members who have worked together to create a visual tribute to remembrance.
It will remain in place until 12 November, allowing residents additional time to visit after Remembrance Sunday.
Further poppy displays are located outside St Catherine’s and St Paul’s Parish Church and near the War Memorial in Hoddesdon.
Remembrance Sunday Continues a National Tradition
Remembrance Sunday is observed across the United Kingdom on the second Sunday of November, commemorating those who died in military service and recognising the contribution of Armed Forces personnel.
The occasion is closely associated with the red poppy, a longstanding symbol of remembrance and support for the Armed Forces community.
For Broxbourne, the programme combines established civic ceremonies with community-led initiatives, reflecting the continuing role of remembrance in local public life.
With thousands having attended previous commemorations, the Council’s invitation provides another opportunity for residents to come together in a shared act of reflection.
All members of the public are welcome to attend the services and wreath-laying ceremonies scheduled across Cheshunt, Hoddesdon, Goffs Oak and Broxbourne on Sunday, 8 November.
