Broxbourne is set to take part once again in Great Big Green Week, with local organisers planning a series of free events aimed at promoting climate action and nature protection across the Borough. The initiative will run from Saturday 6 June to Sunday 14 June 2026, aligning with a nationwide programme coordinated by The Climate Coalition.
The annual campaign has grown significantly in recent years, attracting widespread participation across the UK. According to organisers, last year’s event engaged more than one million people through thousands of community-led activities, including repair cafés, guided nature walks, clean-up drives and wildlife initiatives.
Growing local engagement reflects national momentum
Broxbourne’s involvement has expanded steadily over the past three years, reflecting increasing public interest in grassroots environmental action. In 2025, the Borough hosted up to 18 events across 12 venues, signalling strong community uptake and collaboration between local organisations.
This year’s programme builds on that momentum, offering a diverse schedule of activities designed to appeal to families, residents and environmental groups alike. The national theme, “Together for Good,” underscores the importance of collective action in addressing climate challenges and safeguarding natural ecosystems.
Among the planned events are an allotment open day organised by Broxbourne Big Local, alongside birdwatching sessions and guided nature walks led by the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds. In addition, residents will have access to free “Dr Bike” sessions, providing bicycle maintenance and repair services aimed at encouraging sustainable transport.
Cedars Park to host flagship Big Green Fest
Family-friendly event to anchor week-long programme
The centrepiece of Broxbourne’s Great Big Green Week will be the second annual Big Green Fest, scheduled to take place at Cedars Park on Sunday 7 June. The event will be held in the vicinity of the Cedars Park Café, with additional indoor talks hosted in the venue’s meeting room throughout the day.
Organisers have positioned the festival as a family-friendly gathering, combining educational workshops with hands-on activities. Attendees will be able to participate in textile upcycling sessions, construct bird boxes, and attend workshops focused on improving household energy efficiency.
A free Dr Bike stall will also be present, reinforcing the event’s emphasis on practical sustainability measures. Meanwhile, the Cedars Nature Centre will contribute to the programme by hosting a nature scavenger hunt aimed at engaging younger visitors.
Accessibility and information
All events scheduled as part of Great Big Green Week in Broxbourne will be free of charge and open to the public, reflecting the initiative’s goal of inclusivity and widespread participation. Organisers have emphasised that the programme is designed to be accessible to individuals of all ages and backgrounds, encouraging community-wide involvement in environmental action.
Full details of the Borough’s event schedule will be published on the Council’s official events webpage, as well as on the national Great Big Green Week events map. Residents seeking further information can also contact the Council’s sustainability team directly via email.
Community-driven climate action in focus
The continued expansion of Great Big Green Week in Broxbourne highlights a broader trend of localised climate engagement across the UK. By combining practical initiatives with educational outreach, the programme aims to empower individuals and communities to contribute to environmental protection efforts in tangible ways.
With participation levels rising year on year, organisers will be looking to 2026 as an opportunity to further strengthen community networks and reinforce the message that collective action remains central to addressing climate change at both local and national levels.
