CHESHUNT — Thousands of visitors gathered in Grundy Park over the weekend for the annual St George’s Day Family Fun Day, underlining the event’s continued popularity as a cornerstone of the local community calendar.

An estimated 4,000 people attended the event on Saturday 25 April, according to organisers, marking another successful year for the family-focused celebration. The turnout reflects sustained public interest in community-led events that combine traditional entertainment with modern attractions.

The event, organised by the local council, featured a wide-ranging programme designed to appeal to visitors of all ages, blending heritage performances with interactive activities and leisure experiences.

Diverse Programme Blends Tradition and Entertainment

Attendees were offered a variety of live performances throughout the day, including Bird of Prey demonstrations and traditional Morris dancing by ETC Morris Dancers. Dance performances from Valle Academy added a contemporary element to the programme, while Suffolk Swords delivered a historical reenactment of the story of St George.

The group also staged a live archery performance, contributing to the event’s emphasis on immersive and educational entertainment. Meanwhile, the traditional Punch and Judy puppet show remained a central attraction, drawing families throughout the day. The show was sponsored by TFC Waltham Cross.

Organisers also ensured a strong offering of participatory activities. A selection of inflatables and funfair rides provided additional entertainment, while free fitness and sports taster sessions were hosted at the nearby Laura Trott Leisure Centre.

Local Businesses and Charities Showcase Community Engagement

Beyond performances and attractions, the event also served as a platform for local enterprise and community organisations. Visitors had the opportunity to engage with 35 stalls featuring local craftspeople and charitable groups, supporting small businesses and raising awareness of community initiatives.

Such events are increasingly viewed by local authorities as a means of strengthening high streets and fostering economic activity at a grassroots level. By bringing together residents, businesses and organisations in a shared space, they contribute to both social cohesion and local economic vitality.

Council Continues Summer Events Programme

The success of the St George’s Day Family Fun Day forms part of a broader programme of community events planned by the council in the coming months. Officials have outlined a schedule that aims to sustain public engagement through the spring and summer seasons.

Upcoming events include an Open Air Cinema screening in Waltham Cross town centre on Tuesday 26 May, followed by the Broxbourne Big Green Festival at Cedars Park on Sunday 7 June. A further Open Air Cinema event is scheduled to take place in Hoddesdon town centre on Saturday 20 June as part of the Hoddesdon Midsummer Festival.

Sustained Demand for Community-Led Events

The continued success of the Cheshunt event reflects a wider trend across the United Kingdom, where local councils are investing in accessible, family-friendly programming to enhance community wellbeing and support local economies.

With consistent attendance figures and a broadening range of activities, the St George’s Day Family Fun Day appears firmly established as a key fixture in the borough’s annual events calendar.
