After a heat wave that lasted for weeks, torrential rain fell. This Wednesday, several locations in France were put on storm alert, and the Mediterranean coast is expected to experience flooding, rain and strong winds.

However, the first effects were felt in the country on Tuesday, when during the afternoon the capital, Paris, received almost the same amount of rain in an hour and a half as it should have received over a whole month.

According to the French meteorological service, Météo-France, as of 7 pm yesterday, more than 40 mm of rain fell on the French capital, temporarily restricting road traffic in and around the city.

Several metro stations were also forced to close, after water that fell on the surface inundated underground transport platforms.

But it wasn’t just rain that hit Paris. The winds were also strong, as gusts of 100 kilometers per hour were felt atop the Eiffel Tower.

But despite the surprise, public transport returned to the streets of the French capital at the end of the night.

The effects were strongest in cities such as Marseille, where winds of 150 kilometers per hour were recorded, and Montpellier, where 97 millimeters of rain fell in just one hour.

This Wednesday, photos posted on social networks online show hail falling in locations in southwestern France.
