In the first half of 2023, the National Institute for Medical Emergency (INEM) referred 3,647 users with signs and symptoms to the most appropriate hospitals, through Via Verde do AVC. On World Stroke Day, celebrated on October 29, INEM revealed that in only 57% of cases, users called 112 within the first two hours after symptoms appeared.

Between January and June 2023, the National Institute of Internal Medicine referred 3,647 patients with suspected stroke to the most appropriate hospitals, through Via Verde do AVC. The Porto region recorded the highest number of cases, with 725 patients referred, followed by Lisbon and Braga, with 683 and 261 cases, respectively.

Figures for the first half of 2023 show that Centro Hospitalar e Universitário Lisboa Norte – Hospital de Santa Maria, in Lisbon, was the hospital that received the most suspected stroke cases via Via Verde do AVC, with 281 records. It is followed by the Garcia de Orta Hospital in Almada and the Braga Hospital, with 192 and 173 cases, respectively.

The data now released by INEM reflects a greater number of records, compared to previous years, due to the implementation of the iTEAMS tool (INEM Tool for Emergency Medical Alert System), which is operational in all INEM emergency medical facilities and in 115 entities of the Integrated Emergency Medical System (firefighters and Portuguese Red Cross ).
