WordPress is one of the most popular platforms on the Internet for creating websites and blogs, and its features include automatic sharing of content created for social platforms such as Twitter.
However, recent changes to the Twitter API have also brought about changes in the way these features are used. And as of today, WordPress is the latest downgrade of tools that use the Twitter API.
According to the press release from AutomatticThe entity running WordPress is currently removing the ability to automatically share blog posts from the platform to Twitter, via the Jetpack plugin. This measure will be applied due to the new costs that Twitter is implementing, for those who want to use its API.
JetPack Social is a plugin available for WordPress, which among its features is the ability to automatically share new content generated on a website on this platform on social networks.
A company that needs advanced API access – perhaps the same access that WordPress would need – would have to pay upwards of $42,000 per month to maintain access. Automattic states that this decision is due to the costs associated with the API.
The company claims that it will try to negotiate new terms of use for the API with Twitter, but has come to no conclusion. As such, the only possible action to be taken would be to stop the automatic sharing of Content on the Platform.
The company stresses that the measure will only apply to posts on Twitter, with the remaining social networks working normally. In addition, the company also stresses that it hopes to integrate content sharing for Mastodon and Instagram in the “near future,” which will help users who want to build an audience on other platforms.
At the same time, this action has a huge impact on Twitter. WordPress is currently one of the most popular platforms for creating websites on the Internet. Data shows that 43% of websites are running some version of WordPress.
Similarly, the plugin responsible for JetPack social posts is listed on the WordPress plugins page with over 5 million active installs.
By removing the ability to share content to Twitter, WordPress also no longer encourages use of the platform, which may translate to less content created for Elon Musk’s social network.
Added to this are other companies and entities that have already confirmed that they will stop using the Twitter API and publish content on the platform, precisely because of the same decision to change the pricing of the platform’s API.
