Goiania – PhD student in the Graduate Program in Tropical Medicine and Public Health (PPGSP) Amanda de Oliveira Matos and researchers from other educational and research institutions in Brazil (UFTM, UFMG, UFBA, Fiocruz-Ceará) recently published an article in an international journal Computers in biology and medicine, which is known for its high editorial quality and rigorous peer review process. The article, which is part of a student’s dissertation, deals with “Development of a polyvalent vaccine by immunoinformatics against rotavirus and norovirus (ChRNV22)”.

The research is directed by Professor Helioswelton Sales de Campos, of the Institute of Tropical Diseases and Public Health (IPTSP), as well as coordinator of the Institute’s Laboratory for Mucosal Immunology and Immunoinformatics (LIM), where the research is being conducted.

The article presents an unprecedented demonstration of a vaccine against both viruses simultaneously, rotavirus and norovirus, since they are major causes of acute diarrheal disease (ADD). According to Professor Helioswilton Sales de Campos, the study uses immunoinformatics, a field of research that integrates knowledge of immunology and applied informatics to analyze genomic, proteomic and immunological data, in order to identify relevant antigens, determine the potential efficacy of a vaccine and simulate the best immunization strategies. This approach allows faster and more comprehensive analysis of large amounts of data related to the immune response, accelerating the process of vaccine discovery and development.

Both rotavirus and norovirus can be transmitted through contaminated food and water, or through contact with other infected people, causing gastroenteritis, with symptoms such as severe diarrhea followed by vomiting, and often fever, which can affect adults and the elderly. age and children.
