The Director-General of the World Health Organization, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, has warned against gatherings as the festive season approaches, warning that it could lead to “an increase in cases, an increased burden on health systems, and more deaths” for each COVID-19.

“We all want to go back to normal. The fastest way to do that is for leaders and individuals to make difficult decisions that need to be made to defend ourselves and others. In some cases, that means canceling or postponing events.”Ghebreyesus explained during a press conference on Monday.

“A canceled event is better than a canceled life. Urge to cancel now and celebrate late rather than celebrate now and regret later.

Adhanom explained that there is now evidence that this new strain “spreads much faster” than the previous dominant strain, Delta, and causes infection in people who have already been vaccinated or who have recovered from Covid-19 disease.

“It is more likely that people who have been vaccinated or recovered from COVID-19 can become infected or infected again,” Tedros said.

Therefore, the World Health Organization considers it “unwise” to conclude that Omicron is a “mild” alternative. “It is unwise to think that this is a mild species that will not cause serious disease, because with increasing numbers, all health systems will be under stress,” said Somya Swaminathan, chief scientist at the World Health Organization. However, the World Health Organization has given some hope in considering that the epidemic, which has already caused more than 5.6 million deaths worldwide, may end in 2022 if 70 percent of the world’s population is vaccinated by the middle of next year.

“Our hope is that this disease will become a relatively mild disease that is easily preventable and easily treatable,” said Mike Ryan, WHO’s lead emergency specialist. “He declared that if we can reduce the transmission of the virus to a minimum, we will be able to end the epidemic.”

However, Tedros also said that China – the country where the SARS-CoV-2 virus was first detected – should provide more data on the origin of Covid-19 to help with future anti-epidemic policy.

“We need to keep going until we know the origins, we need to work harder because we have to learn from what happened to do better in the future,” said the WHO Director-General.

He concluded by saying, “The year 2022 should be the year we ended the epidemic.”
