Elton John entertained a huge crowd at his last UK concert at Glastonbury on Sunday night, delighting loyal fans but disappointing others who expected more cameo appearances from surprise guests.
Tens of thousands of fans heard Guns N’ Roses, Arctic Monkeys, Foo Fighters, Lizzo, Luis Capaldi and more following two sunny days at the famous South West England music festival.
“Oh wow. I never thought I’d be playing at Glastonbury. Here I come,” John, wearing a shiny gold coat and pink glasses, said at the start of his first appearance at Worthy Farm. “It’s a very special and emotional night for me because it’s probably my last show in England and England.”
The artist received four guests at various stages of his performance: singers Jacob Lusk, Stephen Sanchez and Rina Sawayama; and Brandon Flowers of the rock band The Killers, with whom John played Little dancer For an exciting crowd.
Some fans were hoping for more stars after last year’s Glastonbury, where Paul McCartney was joined on the Pyramid Stage by surprise guests Bruce Springsteen and Dave Grohl.
“As an Elton fan, I thought he was great, but the guests could have been better. John, 76, is nearing the end of his latest tour, of which Glastonbury is the last British show.
“I want to thank all of you for putting on your suits, glasses and dresses,” he told the sea of humanity in front, stopped by many in bright dresses and glasses. “I also want to thank you for the 52 years of incredible love and loyalty you’ve shown me. It’s been an incredible journey and I’ve had so much fun.”
