“Verstappen’s titles have more value than Hamilton’s titles”

The Spanish driver defends that the Englishman from Mercedes only had to fight for titles against his teammate

Fernando Alonso congratulated Max Verstappen on the title he won this season in Formula 1, but did not receive the praise of the Dutch Red Bull driver.

The Spaniard even considered the titles that Verstappen won in recent years were more difficult than those won by Lewis Hamilton for Mercedes.

“Max titles are more valuable than Hamilton’s. I have a lot of respect for Lewis, but it’s different to win seven world titles when you just have to fight your teammate. I think a tournament like this is less valuable than if you have to fight against other riders who have equal or better materials. The Spaniard told De Telegraaf.

Fernando Alonso also noted that he went through a very similar situation early in his career, when he faced Michael Schumacher.

“In 2005 and 2006 I had a good start to the year and was able to build an advantage. Others had a better car, but I managed that difference. I never had to fight with my teammate Giancarlo Fisichella to win the title. Max also didn’t fight Sergio Perez or Alex Albon to win races.”

Alonso also defended Max Verstappen to win two titles in different circumstances.

He concluded, “This year Max was very dominant and managed to reach the title with anticipation. Last season was different.”
