Vatican: Pope announces creation of 21 cardinals, including Archbishop of Dili

VATICAN CITY, May 29, 2022 (Ecclesia) – Pope Francis today announced a village council to create 21 cardinals, including the 53-year-old Archbishop of Dili (East Timor), Virgilio do Carmo da Silva.

In September 2019, the Pope decided to establish the ecclesiastical province of Dili, appointing Dr. Virgilio do Carmo da Silva as the first Metropolitan Archbishop of the region.

Francis appointed the future Cardinal, a Salesian monk, Bishop of Dili on January 30, 2016, and participated in the Synod of Bishops dedicated to young people, in 2018.

Churches for the creation of the new cardinals will take place on August 27 and is the first since November 2020.

The list includes 16 future cardinals under the age of 80, electing to an eventual secret meeting, including the youngest member of the College of Cardinals, the 47-year-old Italian missionary Giorgio Marengo, and the 47-year-old Apostolic Prefect in Ulaanbaatar (Mongolia).
