Brazil has 35 universities among the best higher education institutions in the world, according to the QS World University Ranking, released this week. In the previous version of the survey, which is one of the most important institutions in the international analysis of higher education, there were 27 Brazilian institutions. The best university was the University of São Paulo (USP), where it ranked 115th, six places higher than it had in 2021.
Among the Brazilians with the best placements are the State University of Campinas (Unicamp), at 210, and the Federal University of Rio (UFRJ), at 333. Most Brazilian women on the list are public, with the exception of the Pontifical Catholic Universities (PUCs) in Rio, São Paulo, Campinas, Parana, Rio Grande do Sul and Minas, as well as Mackenzie.
Brazil is the Latin American country with the largest number of representatives. At the top of the list is the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), in the United States, the University of Cambridge in the United Kingdom, and Stanford, also in the United States.
The ranking, in its 19th edition, has analyzed more than 2,400 universities from 100 countries, and nearly 1,500 universities are included in the list. Among the criteria for rating institutions are academic reputation, reputation among employers, professor-student ratio, scientific citations, and foreign professors ratio, among others.
QS Senior Vice President Ben Suter said Brazilian higher education faces challenges, in the face of budget cuts by the government. “Given that the majority of Brazilian research is conducted by public universities and funded by state and national resources, these cuts represent a blow to the ambitions of the country’s universities,” he says.
“Despite this, Brazil continues to produce important and relevant research, for example, Jaqueline Goes de Jesus, of the University of São Paulo, has achieved worldwide recognition for its work sequencing the genome of one of the covid-19 species.” See 35 Brazilian universities in order:
