On August 22, a family went to the restaurant in southern Arezzo to celebrate their mother’s birthday, having previously asked if they could take a cake from the bakery, To be kept in the refrigerator during the meal and then served at the party time.

“They charged us a lot for the cake we brought. I paid €46 for the cake and he charged me €58.50 for the fees,” the birthday girl’s daughter revealed on social media, sharing a photo of the dinner bill.

Restaurant owner revealed The Italian newspaper “Corriere Fiorentino” reported that the story is true, justifying it as an institution’s policy.

“We don’t charge a cover charge and we mainly serve our own produce, so we try to discourage customers from bringing things from outside. If we consider that a cover charge in Arezzo costs on average €2.50 per person, the difference is not that big,” he began.

My restaurant is responsible for the costs of waiters, dishwashers and other related services. “Somehow, we have to get them back,” he added.

However, the owner admitted that he was not there that night and that his staff may have been too demanding in handling the situation, and the “fee” could have been reduced a bit or even charged nothing at all.

“It is better for people to get less than 50 euros and go home happy than for there to be a misunderstanding that leads us all to harm,” he concluded.

This episode is not new in Italy. In August last year, a restaurant in Palermo, Sicily, shocked its customers with this: Charge 20 euros To cut a birthday cake.
