UK Government confirms support for new phase of REM programme

The UK Government has assured Acre State of its interest in adopting the new phase of the REM programme. The announcement comes after a recent monitoring mission that certified progress in projects aimed at conserving forests and benefiting riparian communities, tribals and rural producers.

In a document signed by the United Kingdom’s Deputy Ambassador to Brazil, Melanie Hopkins, the British government recognized Acre’s important role in environmental public policy and congratulated them for hosting the 1st Indigenous Forum on Climate Change and Ecosystem Services.

Upon learning of the decision, Governor Gladson Camille thanked the United Kingdom for its partnership and reiterated the executive branch’s commitment to continuing to protect nature and the socioeconomic development of the people.

“This decision by the British government makes us happy and, at the same time, proves that the work done in recent years to protect the forest and its inhabitants is working well. Acre is an example to the world, and we are going to go further. We want to incorporate alternatives that protect the environment and improve the lives of our people.” He commented.

The REM program is coordinated by the State Planning Secretariat (Seplan). Portfolio holder, Ricardo Brando, recalled that the initiative was a finalist for the 2023 Competitiveness Award promoted by the Center for Public Leadership (CLP).

“This demonstrates the success of the REM project, which is carried out with great commitment and seriousness by many professionals. We are delighted with this nomination, competing against 150 other projects, and we look forward to the continued support of the UK government with enthusiasm,” he emphasized.

Jonathan Donatoni, Secretary of the Civil House, highlighted the Acre government’s commitment to the environmental theme. “Present figures show a reduction in the number of incidents of burning and illegal deforestation. The government will continue to be firm in its fight against forest encroachment,” he assured.

The REM project is the result of a financial collaboration between the governments of Acker, Germany and the United Kingdom through the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) and the United Kingdom’s Energy Security and Net Zero (DESNZ). ) , through KfW, through various organizations, implementing projects aimed at protecting forests that benefit local people.
