The Ministry of Health says this situation will be compensated for by increasing the number of new doctors in the system.

Data sent by the Department of Health to Parliament, in the explanatory note to its 2024 budget, shows that over the next seven years, the pressure caused by the shortage of doctors in the National Health Service (SNS) will be felt mainly in hospitals with medical specialties such as, for example, medicine Ophthalmology, dermatology and otolaryngology.

The number of medical professionals eligible for retirement will gradually increase, reaching a peak in approximately four years, and then gradually declining.

To get an accurate idea of ​​the pressure the NHS will be under, at the peak of this time period, around 500 specialist doctors will retire every year.

In its budget explanatory note sent to Parliament, the Ministry of Health said categorically: “The professional group of doctors has an asymmetric distribution, with a large number of doctors on retirement terms, which, if achieved, would mean a decrease in the number of doctors, which is the root cause of the difficulties that “The NHS is facing it today in certain services and areas of the country.”
