The United States held a meeting with China, France, Russia and the United Kingdom on nuclear weapons and risk reduction – Executive Digest

This month, the United States called for a meeting of experts from China, France, Russia and the United Kingdom to discuss nuclear weapons issues, including reducing strategic risks, Reuters reported, citing sources in the US State Department, this month.

According to the ministry, Washington hosted the meeting that took place between June 13 and 14 in Cairo (Egypt) between the five countries that declared nuclear weapons, describing it as “a continuous exchange in the context of the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons.” (TNP).

The ministry announced that the experts were chosen by the Ministries of Foreign Affairs and Defense of the respective countries, where they discussed “reducing strategic risks, as well as nuclear principles and policies.”

The Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons, which entered into force in 1970, aims to halt the expansion of the capacity to manufacture nuclear weapons and to guarantee the right of members to develop nuclear energy for peace purposes. The treaty allowed the five nuclear-armed states – permanent members of the United Nations Security Council – to keep their nuclear arsenals.
