On Monday, Prime Minister Antonio Costa said Portugal and the United Kingdom had signed a joint declaration on bilateral cooperation, which is the broadest in terms of sectors covered by all EU member states.

Antonio Costa assumed the position after being received by British Prime Minister, Boris Johnson, at No. 10 Downing Street, in London, the meeting lasted about 45 minutes and was also attended by the Portuguese Foreign Minister, João Gomes Cravinho.

“This joint declaration will be key to re-launching the world’s oldest post-Brexit coalition. It was one of the first member states to sign and probably this declaration covers more topics, from defense and research, through to investment, trade and technologies digital transformation and renewable energies,” the Portuguese CEO Commander told reporters. “These are the challenges we face and we can respond to together. The fact that we have such a strong scientific community here in the UK helps a lot in creating bridges between our scientific institutions and universities,” he said.

In front of reporters, Antonio Costa also stressed that the UK is “increasingly investing in Portugal”, which is benefiting British companies from the UK’s Brexit benefits and the benefits of staying in the EU by investing in Portugal.

“They invested mainly in technology,” he added.
