Apple is in the process of revamping iPadOS, with new features that make it a more modified system than what’s available. This tablet is getting closer and closer to being a PC and its operating system has to keep up with this change.

An update presented last week showed just that, with the arrival of Stage Manager, for both iPadOS 16 and macOS Ventura. Now, the Cupertino giant has revealed why this novelty cannot be used by all iPads.

Stage Manager is a completely different way to organize a user's desktop. Arrange open windows around the sides of the screen into thumbnails that can be retrieved at any time. In addition, it allows you to group windows to make it easier to get things done.

Additionally, in both iPadOS and macOS Ventura, it's possible to have a window open and well-centered, which is in the user's focus. So, everything is centered around this application and in this window, for the user who is focused on this workspace.

I asked Apple about Stage Manager on the iPad too, and here's what they said:

This novelty is now known, and it won't be available on all iPads where iPadOS 16 can be installed. Based on what's been revealed, only the newer and those with a SoC M1 from Apple will be able to use Stage Manager. Apple has already come to explain the reason for this limitation.

Stage Manager is a fully integrated experience that delivers an all-new window experience that is incredibly fast and responsive and allows users to run 8 apps simultaneously on an iPad and an external display at up to 6K resolution. Delivering that experience with the speed users have come to expect from an iPad's first touch experience requires ample internal memory, ultra-fast storage, and flexible I/O ports from the external age, all delivered by iPads with the SoC M1.

As it was justified, everything depends on the resources that these devices are able to offer the user. Only those with a SoC M1 present are able to offer these capabilities that Stage Manager needs, both in terms of processing and memory.

Thus, as we've explained, Phase Manager will only be available for iPads that have Apple's SoC M1. For comparison, the current iPad Pro features this SoC and up to 16GB of RAM, but the 2020 model has Apple's Bionic SoC and 6GB of RAM.

Apple does not exclude the possibility of using Stage Manager on older models and without SoC M1. However, to ensure a complete user experience, it has set this limit and will enforce it.
