Brazilian men live, on average, 7.2 years less than women, according to IBGE data. Health, more than genetics, is the result of healthy habits and prevention. However, in addition to not being used to taking care of their health, they have fewer medical appointments and preventive tests than women. Therefore, in order to promote the subject and educate municipal employees about the importance of early diagnosis of prostate cancer and health care, the Administration Secretariat promoted, on Friday (25), to hold a virtual meeting with specialists in this subject.

Valeria Pugliese, psychiatrist and coordinator of the Department of Public Health – COGESS, City of São Paulo, explained that according to the data of the Mortality Information System of the Ministry of Health, 16,055 men died as a result of prostate cancer. Cancer in Brazil, which corresponds to about 40 deaths per day.

The National Cancer Institute estimates that there are 65,000 new cases each year, making this disease the second most common cancer in men, behind only non-melanoma skin cancer. November is not only about preventing prostate cancer, but taking care of men’s health in general. He warns of our role in doubling down on all the issues raised during the event.

During the meeting, it was possible to understand how the city affects human health. Paulo Saldiva, a professor in the department of pathology at the University of the South Pacific College of Medicine, explained how a stressful routine causes men to get sicker and die much earlier than women.

“Life in a big city greatly affects people’s health. This has been known for a long time, as the city consumes the time of its residents, preventing them from devoting time to healthcare. An example is app drivers who sit 12-16 hours a day and are exposed to various aspects lead to various diseases,” he explains.

Marcela Arruda, Secretary of the Municipal Administration of São Paulo, knows that it is essential to disseminate information about the importance of prevention. When we talk about prostate cancer, there is a lot of prejudice, fear, and misinformation out there. This compromises early diagnosis of many diseases and also prevents treatment,” he says. Marcella also highlighted that the management secretariat has been listening to suggestions from servers regarding server health in order to promote more aggressive measures.

The Minister of Health of the City of São Paulo, Luis Carlos Zamarco, highlighted some of the men’s health measures implemented by the Minister.

The Ministry of Health has a section dedicated to men’s health. Awareness actions, such as lectures, training courses, etc., are promoted so that employees become aware of health issues,” he highlights.
