Rafael Henriques, family doctor and head of the Bloco de Esquerda list in Leiria, and some candidates met on Monday with the Board of Directors of the Local Health Unit (ULS) of the West.

According to Bloco de Esquerda, “the difficulties that put ULS at a high level of effort and that test the limits of its professionals every day” were evident.

“These limitations relate to the lack of independence, in particular regarding the management of the recruitment of professionals, but also to the lack of investment, specifically in the implementation of the TAC, whose equipment urgently needs to be replaced and already has a history of damage,” the party stated.

According to Blocko de Esquerda, “The lack of investment is also felt not only in the field of hospital health care, where there is a serious shortage of obstetrics and internal medicine specialties, but also at the primary health care level where there are municipalities in the country.” The province of Leiria (Peniche, Bombaral and Óbidos, the three regions covered by this ULS system) where more than half of the population does not have a family doctor, but they also do not have a sufficient number of nurses and operational assistants.

The construction of the new hospital was also discussed. The Left Bloc had the opportunity to defend the construction of the new hospital, the preservation of the old hospital structures, and their reconversion or adaptation in order to ensure close response to outpatient consultations for certain specialties, the day hospital, and the continuation of rehabilitation treatments and care.

He also advocated strengthening the public transportation network to connect different health units within the same ULS, ensuring interconnection between hospital structures and primary care units.
