Oakland power-pop outfit The Goods have released “Minor Key,” the second advance single from their forthcoming album Goodbye Summertime, as songwriter and producer Rob Good prepares to introduce a broader, more personal direction for the California-based project.

Released on 19 August through Dandy Boy Records, “Minor Key” follows the earlier single “Summer’s Almost Gone” and offers another preview of the 14-track album, which is scheduled for release on 16 September 2026. The new material blends the band’s established guitar-pop foundations with elements of indie pop, psych-pop, jangle pop and sunshine pop.

‘Minor Key’ Explores Heartbreak, Memory and Moving On

While “Summer’s Almost Gone” focused on appreciating the present before it disappears, “Minor Key” turns towards the emotional aftermath of a relationship and the process of leaving someone behind.

Good describes the track as “a bittersweet goodbye to someone left behind.”

The 3-minute, 38-second song reflects the wider themes running through Goodbye Summertime, an album shaped by a period of significant personal change for the songwriter.

“My whole life turned upside down one summer,” recalls Good. “The long-term relationship I was in collapsed, and in the wake of that, I found new love. I was sorting through the grief and failure of my previous relationship and the bliss and anxiety of my new one all at once, all while basically living at my recording studio, and I found myself in an intensely creative state.”

Songs Developed During an Intensely Creative Period

Rather than being developed gradually over several years, much of the forthcoming record emerged while Good was experiencing the events that ultimately inspired its songs.

“The songs came fast. “I’d be experiencing some crazy high or crushing low, and I’d write a song about it and immediately record it. Many of these songs are real-time accounts of what I was going through in those moments.”

That approach gives the album an autobiographical foundation, with individual tracks documenting changing emotions around relationships, uncertainty and personal renewal.

Goodbye Summertime Expands The Goods’ Musical Palette

Across its 14 tracks, Goodbye Summertime moves beyond the jangling power-pop sound associated with The Goods’ earlier releases.

Songs including “Lazy,” “Punchbowl,” “Wing” and closing track “Sleepytime” introduce different arrangements and textures. “Lazy” incorporates a psychedelic influence, while “Punchbowl” features Mellotron-driven elements. “Sleepytime”, meanwhile, develops around a Wurlitzer-led arrangement.

The album was produced by Good at his Oakland studio and includes contributions from Cherron Arens, Yea-Ming Chen and Ian McBrayer. Bart Thurber handled mixing and mastering.

The production maintains the personal character of the songs while allowing The Goods to broaden the project’s sound across guitar pop and related genres.

Oakland Music Scene Remains Central to the Record

Oakland and the wider San Francisco Bay Area also provide an important backdrop to the album. Good’s experiences within the area’s neighbourhoods, clubs and independent record stores have helped shape his approach to songwriting and recording.

That local connection is particularly evident in “Minor Key,” which presents its farewell narrative through the atmosphere of late-night journeys and memories of relationships that have ended.

Despite the record’s focus on heartbreak and change, Good said its overall message is ultimately more optimistic.

“There’s some pain in there, but there’s a lot of joy as well, and creating the record was a joyous experience,” says Good. “Ultimately, it’s about persisting through difficult times and finding a way to carry on. That’s what making this record helped me to do.”

The Goods Prepare for September Album Release

With “Minor Key” now available, Dandy Boy Records is positioning the single as the latest introduction to a record that combines The Goods’ established melodic songwriting with a wider range of instrumentation and influences.

The release follows “Summer’s Almost Gone” as the second advance track from the project, giving listeners another indication of the emotional and musical range planned for the full album.

Goodbye Summertime is scheduled for release on 16 September 2026, with its 14 tracks documenting a period of personal upheaval, creative momentum and eventual renewal for Good.
