The past week has seen an increase in Covid-19 cases in the Alto Tamiga region, especially in Chaves, being the province in the region with the most active cases, the largest number of residents in quarantine and the highest rate of infection. Illness in the last 14 days.

According to Gustavo Martins-Coelho, health delegate of USP do Alto Tâmega e Barroso, in statements to VTM, the situation is due to the fact that “this is the municipality with the largest population. Even if the incidence is not, in the fourteen days past, in Chaves, higher than in other municipalities, a larger population, in and of itself, will lead to a greater concentration of issues in this municipality.”

Furthermore, “it is the municipality with the highest population density (more than twice the average community density in Alto Tamija), and, together with Valbachos, is the only municipality with a city: greater urbanization contributes to a greater concentration of people, facilitating the movement of people the disease “.

According to Gustavo Martins Coelho, “the age group in which the number of cases increased more than 0 to 11 years, which corresponds to the age group not covered by the vaccination against Covid-19”. However, the delegate highlighted its importance.

“From the point of view of clinical severity, the cases observed were mostly mild symptoms, not requiring hospital care. This relative indulgence of the epidemic at this stage is the result of a vaccine that protects patients from serious and fatal forms of the disease.”

However, “we must not forget that even a small percentage of seriously ill people can drain hospital resources, if population transmission occurs in an unrestricted manner.” In this context, the health delegate left some advice for residents at a time when we were taking great strides into a court that, by tradition, calls for socialization.

“At Christmas, there are many gatherings that don’t happen much during the rest of the year, both in terms of the number of people they meet and the origin of those people. Family members who are immigrant or who live in another part of the country often go back to their origins. So, It is essential to consider that each of these trips by family and friends can bring Covid-19 with them from other places.”

So, “The first piece of advice I can give you is: If you haven’t already, get vaccinated. The vaccine is effective and safe. If you have already been vaccinated, but belong to the groups that qualify for a booster, get vaccinated again with that third dose. The second advice is to strengthen the care that has been announced in the past year and a half: use a mask, wash hands, self-monitor for symptoms, and immediately call SNS24 (808 24 24 24) in case of cough, fever, fatigue or loss of taste or smell.”

Finally, “The third tip is to talk to the people around us and promote general health among them: explain the importance of vaccination, if they have not already done so, in addition to the general care you have already done mentioned; and help them isolate SNS24 and contact them if they notice said Covid-19 symptoms above “.

According to the latest special epidemiological bulletin of the Public Health Unit of ACES Alto Tâmega and Barroso, there are 150 active cases of Covid-19 in the region. Boticas has one, Ribeira de Pena, Vila Pouca de Aguiar 7, Montalegre 16, Valpaços 26 and Chaves 98.
