St David’s Day: Google launches Doodle to celebrate the date in Wales and England

Google released a new doodle today to celebrate St. David’s Day, the patron saint of Wales, who is celebrated in England on March 1 as Dydd Gŵyl Dewi Sant in Welsh. On this day, the city of Cardiff holds many celebrations with children dressed in traditional Welsh clothing and their country’s flag.

Saint David was canonized by Pope Callistus in 589 and later became the patron saint of Wales, as each of the four countries of the United Kingdom has its own patron saint with distinct commemorative days.

The Google Doodle combines shapes and colors reminiscent of materials found in Wales and is crafted from acrylic glass cut reminiscent of traditional stained glass windows and the country’s national flower, the daffodil.

Notably, the doodle dedicated to St. David is the only one in England, but it’s not the first time Wales has been honoured. In 2020, the dragon on your flag appeared on the Google homepage with the animation you can see below. The same thing happened in 2022, but with a static image.

Dragon Legend of Dinas Emrys, a castle belonging to a Celtic king, collapsed several times as two dragons battled beneath its foundations, but in the end the red dragon won and became a symbol of Welsh pride. Flag of the country since 1959.

Another recent Google Doodle that has garnered attention is a tribute to Gerald Lawson, the inventor of the video game cartridge.
