The City of São Paulo is applying advanced technology to monitor the brain health of newborns in the neonatal intensive care units (ICUs) of the municipal health network.

Brain monitoring is essential to detect possible changes in newborns who encountered complications during birth or who were born prematurely.

This allows problems to be identified and treatment started immediately, avoiding intellectual or mental damage in the medium and long term.

In units that already have the equipment, 12,768 births were carried out this year, between January and July. Since May, 111 children have benefited from this innovative technology. In 2022, about 40,000 babies were born in municipal maternity hospitals.

New equipment makes it possible to identify earlier a wide range of conditions, such as seizures, that can affect children’s neurological development.

In addition to technology, multidisciplinary teams in hospitals (nurses, nursing technicians, neonatologists, etc.) have undergone specialized training.

The innovation is being implemented for the first time in five municipal hospitals through the Municipal Health Service (SMS):

– His Majesty Waldomero de Paula

– Vila Nova Cachoirinha School Maternity Hospital – Dr. Mario de Moraes Altenfelder Silva

– His Majesty Dr. Fernando Mauro Pires da Rocha – Campo Limbo

– Professor Galala. Alipio Correa Neto – Ermelino Matarazzo

– His Majesty Tide Setubal

The project began after the approval of Municipal Law No. 17569 of June 8, 2021, which established the Brain Protection Program to prevent neurological consequences in children.
