The Sony It has laid off 90 employees from its US offices over the past week. All vacancies have been cut from the department responsible for Play Station It indicates a change in the Japanese giant’s sales strategy.
According to journalist Stephen Totilo, from Axios90 were fired, worked in sales and marketing. That is, layoffs should not affect studios game developers. Sony claimed the move was part of a “global turnaround” for those laid off.
Among the roles these laid-offs have taken on are salesperson positions – people who go from store to store disguising retailers to sell more PlayStation products – as well as some positions directly related to marketing.
According to Totilo, one speculation about the “global shift” that Sony has cited is that the company will focus less on selling physical products, adopting direct selling initiatives to gamers, especially through digital platforms.
The company is currently looking for employees to act as subscription services vendors. Over the past week, Sony revealed the new version of PlayStation Plus, which will now also provide access to hundreds of games, similar to what Microsoft is already doing with Game Pass for Xbox and PC.
Sony has not commented on the layoffs, according to Axios.
