RIO – The new phase of the influenza vaccination campaign begins on Monday in Rio. From tomorrow through April 30, City Hall of Rio will vaccinate seniors 60 or older and health workers of any age in their workplaces. on Friday, The Municipal Health Department (SMS) announced ten days from the start of the campaign. Starting April 4, the campaign against influenza aims to reach 90% of priority groups, which represents 1.8 million carioca.

The final phase of the campaign will take place between May 30 and June 3. On this occasion, priority groups between 5 and 29 years old, as well as health professionals, can be vaccinated. Rio City Council considers ILPI residents and staff, children aged six months to five years, pregnant women and mothers as part of its priority groups.

In addition to those people with permanent disabilities, Indigenous communities, chronically ill people, education personnel, prison staff, populations deprived of liberty, security and rescue forces, armed forces, port workers, truck drivers and road workers as part of the priority groups.

In 2022, the vaccine used in the campaign will protect against the three strains of influenza virus that circulated last year in the southern hemisphere: H1N1, H3N2 Darwin (which caused an outbreak of influenza in the city at the end of 2021) and the B/Victoria strain. The immunizing agent has been produced by the Butantan Institute, it is safe and can be given to immunocompromised people and those with chronic diseases or special conditions. Persons with a history of severe allergic reaction to a previous dose of influenza vaccine should inform their physician or health service, for appropriate evaluation and counselling.

Annual influenza vaccination. Even people who took the dose last year should be vaccinated again this year. For those who have already taken an immunizing agent in previous years, the vaccination schedule is a single dose. For children in the age group who will receive the vaccine for the first time this year, there will be two doses, with an interval of 30 days in between.
