he is Twist. The US Centers for Disease Control (CDC) came to say that MonkeyPox virus particles are transmitted through the air. He clarifies, however, that infection occurs only by close contact and not by air transport.

“Most people think that smallpox is usually transmitted by large droplets, but for some reason it can be transmitted by aerosols of small particles,” said virologist Mark Challberg in an interview with the New York Times.

As such, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends the use of a mask for anyone infected, close contacts and healthcare professionals.

A 2012 study by the University of Maryland in the US described several cases of airborne transmission. In previous smallpox outbreaks in New York and Germany, many people were infected by being in hospitals with infected individuals.

In 2017, an outbreak of monkeypox in Nigeria showed similar characteristics: transmissions within prison and infections were observed in two health workers who had no contact with the patients.

In Portugal, more than 190 cases have already been reported, most of them in Lisbon and the Valle do Tejo, according to the Directorate General of Health, which admitted on Wednesday, June 7, that a vaccine against the disease will be given. “Contains transmission chains” for monkeypox virus.

On the same day, the Director-General of the World Health Organization announced that more than a thousand cases of monkeypox had already been confirmed, in 29 non-endemic countries, and warned that there was already community transmission in some areas.

Remember that monkeypox, of the family of virus that causes smallpox, is transmitted through infections, body fluids, respiratory droplets, and contaminated materials. The incubation period generally ranges from seven to 14 days, and the disease, which is endemic to West and Central Africa, lasts on average from two to four weeks.
