Argentine coach Lionel Scaloni announced, on Tuesday, that he is considering continuing in his position, after the historic victory over Brazil (1-0), at the Maracana Stadium, in the qualifiers for the 2026 World Cup.

Scaloni, the coach who led Argentina to win the 2022 World Cup, said: “Now, I have to stop the ball and start thinking. I have a lot to think about at this time, because this team needs someone with all the positive energies.” Cup and Copa America 2021.

The Argentine coach made these statements, unexpectedly, at the end of the confrontation with the Brazilian team, which was decided by Benfica player Otamendi, with a goal he scored in the 63rd minute.

Scaloni added that his statements were “not a farewell”, but he reinforced that he needed to think, because “the level is very high and it is very difficult to continue.”

The Argentine coach also said that he would speak with the president of the Argentine Federation and with the players, who he noted had given “a lot” to the country.

Argentina won the 2022 World Cup last December, that is, almost a year ago, and ended 2023 on Tuesday with nine victories, in 10 matches, with the exception of the defeat at home to Uruguay (0-2), which preceded the victory in the Maracanã.

The defending world champion, who leads South America’s 2026 World Cup qualifiers after six rounds, will not play again until 2024.
