The coach says he maintains an excellent relationship with the Luz captain.

Roger Schmidt has spoken about his relationship with Rui Costa. In an interview with BePlay, the Benfica coach said he has an excellent relationship with the Reds captain and praised the work he has done since taking over as president. “We talk a lot about football, about Benfica and also about everything that happens in football. To be honest, I really enjoy working with our president because, first and foremost, he is a great person. Secondly, he was a great player and I also followed him when he played. In my opinion, he is a great president. Now I know what it means to be president of Benfica. Why? Because he loves the club. Of course we have to talk about the team, our players and the development of the players. When we first talked about coming to Benfica, there were two tasks for me: the first was to win titles, and the second was to develop the youth. I really enjoy working with the young players and giving them the opportunity to emerge and develop, and of course also thanks to Benfica, who has loved seeing them on the club field in the last two years with players who have been developed from the Benfica campus to the first team. “But in general, working with our president is a great honour, and I appreciate him as a person, as a football expert and also as a human being,” the German coach said.
