Are you a fan of meat, a good bifana or grilled beef steak? Be careful about the amount and type of meat you eat, as well as how often you eat it.

YuA group of scientists from Imperial College London found that processed foods, ready meals and white bread can increase the risk of cancer, reveals a study published in the journal eClinicalMedicine, citing Notícias ao Minuto.

The middle-aged people’s diets were compared with the health records of each of the participants by the researchers. For every 10% increase in calories consumed from processed foods, a 2% increase in the risk of cancer was detected. For example, the chances of developing ovarian cancer increased by 19% with the consumption of ultra-processed foods,” it can be read.

The researchers began by discovering the link between sugary drinks and bowel cancer: Excessive consumption of soft drinks, processed juices, and energy drinks doubles the risk of developing the disease before the age of 50. They believe that half of the cases could be avoided by eating a more balanced diet and replacing red meat with vegetables, for example.

“The study confirms the growing evidence that ultra-processed foods negatively affect our health,” say the study authors. They considered that we should avoid red meat and alcoholic beverages.

They also argue that a good diet should include fruits, vegetables, legumes, whole grains, and beans. Besides diet, researchers say it’s essential to do regular physical activity, avoid smoking, and keep your weight under control.
