Rabies: VISAM identifies two positive bats

Posted on 03/23/2023 at 6:00 PM

Environmental Health Monitoring (VISAM) – an agency of the Unit of Health Promotion Management (UGPS) – identified two bats with rabies in Jundiaí. The two cases, the first in the Jundiai Mirim neighborhood and the other in Parque Centenario, are insectivores. Those responsible for the areas were tipped off and the technicians also looked for signs of nearby colonies. Vaccination against rabies in pets is essential to maintain protection.

“All the orientation work has been carried out around the addresses where the animals are,” explains VISAM coordinator, veterinarian Luis Gustavo Grigota Nascimento.

Insectivorous bats are common in the municipality. With these two animals, the city recorded four positive cases of bats for rabies. In 2022, the city recorded a total of three cases of rabies in bats.

Rabied bats are identified in unusual situations such as lying on the ground or flying during the day

Guidelines
If a bat is identified in unusual situations, such as inside homes, in backyards, flying during the day, or lying on the ground, a person should immediately contact VISAM, by calling (11) 4589-6340 and (11)) 4589 -6350 for animal collection.

If possible, the advice is to isolate and/or immobilize the room in which the animal was found, and place a shield such as a bucket, ice-cream pot, rag or box over it. No one should handle bats without protection – even those found dead.

The rabies vaccine is available free of charge at VISAM, by phone. Dogs and cats must be vaccinated annually.
