Portuguese people living outside Europe can now apply for birth and citizenship registration for their children. Find out how here

The Ministries of Foreign Affairs and Justice announced that Portuguese people living outside Europe can, from Thursday, apply online for birth registration and Portuguese citizenship for their children.

According to a joint statement, Portuguese diaspora communities were covered on four continents: Europe, Africa, America and Asia.

Citizens residing there can apply online for birth registration and grant Portuguese citizenship to their children born less than a year ago, free of charge and without going to the consular post, the note continues.

Online birth registration is now available in all Portuguese-speaking countries, including the Macau Territory, and in many countries whose official language is English, French or Spanish, making a total of 58 countries.

Birth registration is accessed “online” at Justice Gate. To submit the application, it is required to attach a proof of birth document issued by the hospital or maternity hospital where the birth occurred, and the local birth registration.

“Online” birth registration was launched in Portugal on April 13, 2020. On December 21 of the same year, this “online” service began covering the registration of Portuguese citizens born in France and the United Kingdom, and in November 2021 it was extended to all EU countries European.

According to the Ministries of State and Justice, between December 2020 and February 2022, 777 applications for citizenship and birth registration were submitted online.
