Most Portuguese (63%) who buy second-hand do so to save money. The conclusion is taken from the Cetelem Observer European Consumption Barometer 2022 which finds the main reason for this behavior in the context of economic uncertainty.

Financial motivation is dominant in terms of wanting to be greener (38%), to increase consumption, or in a more diverse way (28%). Savings expectations are less common among Europeans (52%), being higher in Portugal (63%), Slovakia (60%), Sweden (59%) and slightly lower in Italy (47%), Austria and the United Kingdom. United Kingdom (48%).

In the case of the Portuguese, 69% of consumers choose to put aside money saved on second-hand purchases – higher than the European average of 52%. This money is then used to purchase other products, and respondents under the age of 50 are most willing to do so.

Regarding the circular economy in particular, 6 in 10 Portuguese say that the circular economy allows them to buy the same amount of goods, but reduces waste, sells, donates or keeps their goods longer rather than throwing them away.

However, beyond this reasonable and reasonable consumption, it seems that the main objective of consumers when engaging in buying and selling of used goods is to sell products to earn more money. The Portuguese and Swedes are the most likely view of this view, with nearly 8 in 10 Europeans finding motivation in this possibility.
