The Michelin Guide Spain and Portugal 2022 distinguishes five Portuguese restaurants with one star, the organization announced, Tuesday, at a ceremony held in the Spanish city of Valencia.
A Michelin star, which identifies “high-class cuisine, pays to stop”, was awarded to the restaurants “Al Sud” (Lagos), “A Fair Tavira” (Tavira), “Cora” (Lisbon), “Esporão” (Reguengos de Monsaraz) and “Vila Foz” (Porto).
In addition to these innovations, in 2022, Portugal has maintained all the previous distinctions and still does not have a restaurant with the highest rating (three stars, “unique cuisine that justifies the trip”).
Thus, the country has seven two-star restaurants (“Excellent cuisine, it’s worth the detour”) and 26 Michelin-starred restaurants.
The awards for next year’s edition of the Iberian Guide were announced today at a ceremony at the Palau des Arts Reina Sofía, in Valencia, in front of some 600 guests, including chefs, political leaders, businessmen and the press.
And in Spain, four restaurants climbed to the second star, while 27 got one star. The 11 three-star restaurants from the previous version have been maintained.
On the other hand, two restaurants lost their star and 22 restaurants lost the first. Reasons range from inspectors’ assessment to closure or change of location.
Another novelty in this guide is the entry into Andorra with a new restaurant (“ebaya”) with the first franchise.
In total, the 2022 collection of the Iberian Michelin Directory includes 1,362 restaurants from Spain, Portugal and the Principality of Andorra, including 11 three-star restaurants, 40 two-star restaurants and 211 one-star restaurants.
The results reflect, for Michelin, “the vibrancy and liveliness of the Iberian gastronomy scene, which impressed the inspectors”.
“Our inspectors particularly enjoyed preparing for the 2022 selection, given the gastronomic rush that is currently taking place in the Iberian Peninsula, which is being confirmed year after year. In Portugal and Spain, despite the complicated situation of 2021, many young talents have emerged whose concepts are defending Innovative, diverse gastronomical with personality”, said the International Director of Michelin Guides, Gwendal Poulenic.
The distinctions recognize kitchen quality, based on five criteria assessed anonymously by inspectors: product quality, mastery of cooking points and textures, balance and harmony of flavors, kitchen character and regularity.
At the start of the ceremony, chefs from last year’s award-winning restaurants were also called to the stage, as there was no face-to-face party, but only a virtual one due to the COVID-19 pandemic. In the Portuguese case, the restaurants “100 Maneiras” (“chef” Ljubomir Stanisic) and “Eneko Lisboa” (“Chef Lucas Bernardes”) received first star in the 2021 Michelin Guide.
In the Bib Gourmand category, which identifies restaurants with “very favorable value for money, with a full menu of no more than 35 euros”, two Portuguese were selected: “Arkhe” (Lisbon) and “Xtoria” (Setúbal).
Portugal has 36 restaurants in this category, while Spain has 247 (41 new) and Andorra has one, for a total of 284 restaurants in the Iberian directory.
