The government announced on Wednesday that Portuguese residents in the European Union (EU) who wish to apply for Portuguese citizenship for their children born in the European Union or the United Kingdom can now apply for birth registration online.
According to a joint statement by the Ministries of Foreign Affairs and Justice, two government agencies involved in the initiative, the aim is to make it accessible to the entire Portuguese community abroad.
Since December 2020, Portuguese residents in the UK and France have been able to place this order online.
Online access to birth registration is done through the portal da Justica And parents can request the birth registration of their children free of charge, without having to go to the embassy in the jurisdiction where they reside.
