Today, Jose Mourinho, the Portuguese coach of Rome, confirmed that he is the first and only choice for the president of the Portuguese Football Association to be the new coach, but he understood that he should refuse this, because he was happy in Italy.
“I will say something that probably will not interest you, but I would like to take this opportunity to thank the President of the Portuguese Football Federation, because what he told me makes me proud. The fact that he said that I was not his first choice, but the only one. It makes me proud, but I decided not to go I refused, because I am here,” revealed Jose Mourinho, after Roma’s victory (1-0), against Genoa, towards the quarter-finals of the Italian Cup.
The Portuguese coach’s statements do not correspond to what was said by the President of the French Football Federation, Fernando Gomez, when he presented the Spaniard, Roberto Martinez, at Cidade de Futebol, in Oeiras.
“After defining the profile, we talked with a lot of people, but I can say that the only concrete proposal we made to be a coach was Roberto Martinez,” Fernando Gomez said in a press conference on Monday.
The Spanish coach was officially appointed as the new national football coach, succeeding Fernando Santos, after he signed a contract valid until 2026.
