Archaeologists working in the ruins of a medieval convent found under an old supermarket have discovered the remains of more than 240 people, including children.
The “most remarkable” discovery was made under the former Oaky White building in the town of Haverfordwest, Pembrokeshire, Wales.
Archaeologists believe the ruins come from the Priory of São Salvador, a monastery founded in 1256 by an order of Dominican monks.
One researcher said the find provides “a window into medieval Haverfordwest”.
Ocky White was a popular supermarket for over a century before it closed in 2013.
Andrew Shobrook, the site’s supervisor of work, described the convent as a complex of dormitory buildings, Scriptoriums – Rooms dedicated to writing and manuscripts – Stables and Hospital.
“It’s a very prestigious place to be buried. You have a wide variety of people, from wealthy locals to ordinary city dwellers,” he said.
It is believed that the cemetery was in use until the early 18th century.
Half of the remains found were of children, indicating a high infant mortality rate at the time.
All bones will be analyzed for burial in the holy ground closest to where they were found.
Some of the remains have head injuries that are consistent with combat. According to Shobrook, these marks may have been caused by arrows or musket balls.
One theory is that the victims may have predated an attack led by Owain Glyndor, the last native Welshman to hold the title of Prince of Wales.
Welsh and French forces joined forces to fight the English occupation of Wales.
“We know that the city was besieged by Owain Glyndor in 1405, and these people may have been victims of that conflict,” Shobrook believes.
Other finds, including remains and shells, are stored in an abandoned store near the archaeological site.
“Never in my wildest dreams did I think I’d be involved in something this big,” admits archaeologist Gabby Lester.
“This discovery reveals a huge part of the history of Haverfordwest and Pembrokeshire.”
The excavation site is being converted into a food emporium and bar.
