DrDuring the 3rd, 4th and 5th of March, the villages of the municipality of Mogaduru will host the “Med on Tour” programme.

At the beginning of the year, the Municipality of Mgaduru was approached by the Student Association of the Abel Salazar Institute of Biomedical Sciences of the University of Porto, with the introduction of a health screening program in the interior, with a focus on villages.

Within 48 hours, 28 villages will be visited to carry out health checks and demonstrate procedures related to healthy lifestyles to a target group that, due to geographical and social isolation, generally has more difficulties in accessing this type of initiative.

There will be 9 medical students participating in this project, divided into two teams in order to serve as many people as possible.

All the logistics of this operation will be in charge of the Municipality of Mgaduru, which has joined this initiative, “realizing that it is a great opportunity to offer a useful and much needed service to the population and, at the same time, to offer land to future doctors, in anticipation of being able to receive them again”.

The Mayor of Mogadoro, Antonio Pimentel, who is in charge of health, considers proximity to the citizen a strategic element in the policies that will be implemented in this field, taking into account that the local demography is characterized by aging and isolation, which are factors necessary to fight and confront it, with all possible tools.

Med On Tour also aims to highlight a proactive civilian role in combating the abandonment of the interior regions of the country, a victim
of successive inequalities and lack of development opportunities.

This activity reinforces the students’ connection to the villages, towns and cities at home
Residents for health care and contribute to the training of the best doctors.

The initiatives integrated into the Med on Tour project will always be adapted to the realities being experienced locally and implemented
According to the availability and interest of the municipality.

Thus, each region has an excellent opportunity to secure future doctors, since, in addition to taking examinations, students have the opportunity to get to know the municipality better, as well as all its potential.

All participating students will receive, prior to the activity, specific training for independent and competent examining exercise, given by qualified health professionals, assigned to the Centro Hospitalar Universitário do Porto.
