Former Benfica centre-back Carlos Marchena felt betrayed when he was transferred to the Reds in 2000/01. The defender played for Sevilla and did not like the way the club managed the process.

“I didn’t want to leave. They told me they had to sell because there was no money to pay the light. I had a lot of offers. I was sitting with Milan, but Benfica arrived first and put the money on the table. The European Under-21 Championship and I landed at 10 o’clock at night. My parents were waiting for me, I thought I would go home, but they told me that I had to go to the club. Three guys were waiting for me and they told me that I was sold and I asked: “How?”, He began to tell the Spanish portal “Relevo”.

The former Spain international named the players and showed he was disappointed. “Roberto Alice – may God have mercy on him – was the president and my manager at the time, Rodríguez de Moya y Monchi. They told me he had been sold to Benfica and that he had to go to Lisbon the next morning. Once and a thousand times they said yes. I denied it again. There was a man who worked as an intermediary who threatened me and said that if I don’t go to Portugal I will be worried because I won’t play in the third division, they sold me and I’m gone,” explains the former player, who spent a season at Luz before being sold to Valencia.

In 2018/19 Marchena returned to Sevilla as an advisor and later became the club’s youth coordinator. During this period, he met Monchi, the sporting director of Sevilla, and he did not forget what happened nearly two decades ago. He stressed it out, though, as Marchena ended up leaving Sevilla at odds with the project. “Monchi was full of work. He said he wanted to meet him and over the course of a year he didn’t have time.”
