For 55 years, the route, which extends approximately 3,500 kilometers and passes through 14 of the 50 federal units of the United States, has been a National Scenic Byway. The idea of creating what is now known as the Appalachian Trail as a nature hiking trail was first proposed in 1921 by the American forester, planner, and conservationist Benton McKay.
